FACT: Birds can be a significant pest in food premises, such as food storage warehouses, food factories and bakeries. They often gain entry through loading bay areas or damaged roofing.

Rentokil's Bird Deterrents Range

Our range of effective bird deterrents offers you non-toxic, humane ways of dispersing pest bird populations safely.

  • Hawking - An entirely natural solution to deter pest birds. Using specially trained birds of prey - such as Harris Hawks - we can deter seagulls and other pest birds. When seagulls and pigeons regularly see birds of prey in a specific location they will choose to find safer places to nest elsewhere.

  • Egg & nest removal - This prevents adult birds raising their young on site, reduces flock size and encourages birds to move elsewhere.

  • Bird scaring - We can replicate bird distress calls and play them back digitally. To the birds concerned the sounds are a powerful warning cry - so they'll fly off and find somewhere else to roost. This technique only works for gulls and winter roosts of starlings.

Our experienced technicians will always identify the best solution for your individual needs.

Our Five Step Bird Deterrent Plan

  1. Our surveyor will contact you and arrange a convenient time to inspect your premises to assess the pest bird situation.
  2. They’ll recommend an appropriate treatment plan for you. This will include bird-proofing details and price.
  3. We’ll arrange appropriate times for a specialist avian technician to visit you and resolve the problem. They will require more than one visit.
  4. The technician will introduce themselves when they arrive and run through the treatment process before starting work.
  5. Our surveyor or technician will give you advice on how to prevent any future bird pest problems.

Pigeon and Seagull Diseases

Pigeons are hosts to parasitic pests such as ticks, fleas and bird mites, which can spread to people. The insects live on the birds and their droppings but when the birds leave the roost the parasites can invade buildings in search of a new food source.

Pigeons and gulls also harbour some nasty diseases, which could make you seriously ill:

  • Salmonella (pigeons and gulls) - This bacterium is deposited where pigeons defecate. It can lead to Salmonellosis and Paratyphoid fever.
  • Psittacosis (pigeons and gulls) - Also called Ornithosis or pigeon fancier's lung. This infection can be transmitted by inhaling the bacteria from dried droppings or handling feathers of infected birds.
  • Fowl pest (pigeons) - Also known as fowl plague or Newcastle disease. This virus can be transmitted to people when they’re exposed to faecal and other excretions from infected birds.
  • Escherichia coli (E.Coli) (gulls) - Can lead to illnesses such as gastro-enteritis and septicaemia.
  • Fungal infections (gulls)- These include Histoplasmosis and Cryptococcosis and are carried within bird droppings.
  • Bird mites - are often found in bird’s nests and roosting places. They feed mainly on bird blood but will also bite people, too.
