Identifying the early signs of a wasp nest is essential for maintaining a safe environment at your home or business. In Ireland, wasps typically begin building their colonies in spring, and by mid-summer, a single wasp hive can contain thousands of individuals.
If you are noticing an increase in activity, it is important to distinguish between a few stray foragers and a settled infestation.

The most obvious sign is the sheer number of wasps. If you are constantly swatting them away in your garden or kitchen, there is likely a nest nearby. Unlike a solitary black wasp in Ireland, which may just be passing through, social wasps will appear in a constant "stream".
Keep an eye out for a "flight line". This is a steady, directional path that wasps take to and from their home. If you see them repeatedly entering and exiting a specific hole in a wall, a gap in the eaves, or a patch of soil, you have likely discovered a ground wasp nest or an attic colony.
Wasps build their nests from chewed wood pulp and saliva, creating a distinctive grey, papery shell.
Have you noticed strange white lines or "track marks" on your wooden garden furniture, fences, or sheds? Wasps "harvest" wood to build their nests. This scraping is a tell-tale sign that a wasp nest is currently under construction somewhere on your premises.
Sometimes you can hear a nest before you see it. A large colony produces a low, constant buzzing or "clicking" sound. This is often reported by homeowners who have a nest behind a bedroom wall or in the attic.
Wasps are versatile and will build their homes in any sheltered spot. Common locations our technicians encounter include:
Wasps make their nests from chewed wood pulp and saliva, giving them distinctive papery walls.
Nests are usually built in sheltered spots with easy access to the outside. You can often find wasp nests in wall cavities, roof spaces, under eaves, in bird boxes, sheds or garages.
To locate a nest, carefully watch the flight path of the returning wasps, this becomes easier later in the summer as the numbers of wasps increase.
You should not attempt to treat a wasp nest if you are sensitive to stings. If you disturb a nest, you may provoke the wasps inside to attack and sting you as a form of defence.
At Rentokil, we offer a professional wasp nest treatment service to protect you from harmful stings by eliminating the nest.
Qualified professionals - All our wasp control technicians are fully trained and equipped with all necessary safety gear to complete the treatment quickly and safely.
Safe treatments - Our technicians follow strict guidelines to ensure you and your family are safe from harm during treatment.
Nest removal - We can also arrange for the removal of a nest (at a later date; at least 48 hours after treatment to allow for scout wasps to return and be killed) to reduce the risk of a secondary infestation.
If you spot the signs of a colony, the most important rule is do not disturb it. While you might be tempted to look for a DIY solution, remember that an Irish wasp can be incredibly aggressive when defending its home. This is especially true for the German Wasp, which is common in Leinster and often found in ground wasp nests.
If you suspect an infestation and need wasp nest removal, it is always safer to call in the experts. At Rentokil, we provide rapid-response wasp nest removal in Dublin and nationwide to ensure the colony is dealt with professionally. We can also confirm if you have a protected bee nest, in which case we will advise on the best ethical course of action.
The Common or Social Wasp (Vespula vulgaris) and the German wasp (Vespula germanica) are the wasps you are most likely to see in your home or business.
Other wasp species are also considered pests but are far less common.
Wasps have much less hair on their bodies than bees.
Wasps have a tighter waist between the thorax and abdomen than bees.
Wasps are sometimes mistaken for hornets as they are similar in appearance, but wasps are smaller in size.
Wasps have distinctive yellow and black markings on their bodies.
They have three main body parts; the head, thorax and the abdomen.
Worker wasps vary in size from 12-17mm.
Only female wasps sting and can do so repeatedly.
The safest and most effective way to handle a wasp nest is to use a professional service. A technician will apply a targeted insecticide—often in a powder or foam form—directly into the entrance of the wasp hive. Once the workers return to the nest, they carry the treatment inside, neutralising the entire colony. For a ground wasp nest, specific subterranean treatments are required to ensure the deep chambers are reached.
While some "knock-down" sprays can kill individual wasps on contact, nothing kills an entire nest instantly. Even with professional-grade treatments, it usually takes a few hours for all the foragers to return to the nest and be exposed to the product. Attempting to "flood" or burn a nest is extremely dangerous and rarely works, as it only agitates the insects.
You should only destroy or treat a nest if it poses a direct threat to people or pets. If a nest is located far away at the bottom of a large garden, it may be best to leave it alone, as wasps are natural pest controllers that eat garden aphids. However, if you find a wasp nest near your door or in the attic, wasp nest removal is recommended to prevent painful stings. Always ensure it is not a bee nest first, as bees are protected and vital to the Irish ecosystem.
At its peak in mid-to-late summer, a healthy wasp hive can contain anywhere from 3,000 to 6,000 wasps. In exceptional years with warm Irish summers, some nests have been known to hold even more.
The lifespan of an Irish wasp depends on its role:
In the spring, a nest may only be the size of a golf ball. However, by August or September, a wasp nest can easily grow to the size of a beach ball or even larger if it is located in a spacious area like an attic or a large garden shed.
