Belfast found itself dealing with some unexpected rodents last week after rats were popping up all over the city.
But there’s no need for the help of a pest control expert, the rats were actually just part of the promotional activity surrounding the opening of an exhibition featuring the works of world renowned street artist Banksy.
Twelve Banksy style images were displayed on walls in various areas throughout Belfast in the lead up to the exhibition which featured the work of not only Banksy but several other urban artists.
Although most people shudder at the sight of a rat or a mouse, the theme of rats has featured very heavily in the work of street artists like Banksy and Blek le Rat over the years.
Some would say a rat seems to be a strange choice of muse but in reality artists can find inspiration in the most mundane of subjects, for example Warhol’s Cambell’s Soup Tin. If you can find inspiration in a tin of soup then why not a rats, mice or some flies.
What might seem scary or dirty and unhygienic to you or I in real life can actually look quite beautiful when immortalised in a painting or sculpture.
So we have put together a gallery featuring some different and interesting pieces of art including; sculptures, paintings and street art, all with one thing in common, the central focus of all these pieces is a different pest!
Enjoy!
