In Ireland we are very lucky to have some of the less scary creepy crawlies out there. But all over the world there are some seriously terrifying creatures to be found. Snakes, spiders, bugs and various venomous creatures can make for some pretty terrifying pests in places like Australia, the USA and South America.

Just to give you a taste of what you’re missing, we have listed some of the world’s most petrifying pests.

Amazonian giant centipede

The Scolopendra Gigantean is also known as the Amazonian giant centipede or  as I like to call it after researching this blog post, “The giant terrifying death crawling creature from my nightmares”, is actually the largest living centipede in the world.

This scary insect generally measures 10 to 12 inches in length but one was found in Venezuela that was 18 inches long!

The creature has 46 legs and eats frogs, tarantulas, birds, lizards, rodents. The centipede can even hang from caves upside-down to catch bats mid-flight.

The giant centipede is excellent at running and climbing (I’m sure having 46 legs helps with that) and kills its prey using highly poisonous venom. A toxic bite from one of these creepy crawlies can induce anaphylactic shock and has even been thought to have killed small children on some very rare occasions.

Brazilian Huntsman Spider

According to Guinness World Records the Brazilian Huntsman Phoneutriafera is the most venomous spider in the world.

This 8 legged menace has the most active neurotoxic venom of any other living spider.  Its venom is so strong that only 0.006 mg could kill a mouse!

Its favourite hiding places are normally in human homes, clothes and shoes and they can be very aggressive when disturbed and can go on a biting frenzy! They have been known to cause the deaths of children under seven.

Don’t fret though there is an anti-venom available, and the likelihood of you coming across one of these in Ireland is very definitely minute!

Harvester Ant

Pogonomyrmex Maricopa is more commonly known as the Harvester Ant. This seemingly inconspicuous creature is interestingly the most venomous insect in the world.

These ants bite and sting in separate actions. They will bite and swing themselves around stinging and injecting  poisonous venom over and over again.

12 stings from one of these nasty ants can kill a 2kg rat!

Scary huh?
