“You would not believe your eyes if ten million fireflies light up the world as I fell asleep…” so the #1 song in the UK goes by Owl City.
Am sad to say this then got me a little bit intrigued about these Fireflies (also known as Lightning bugs). Judging by the images I discovered through the magic of online search, they do indeed glow brightly (a bit like those glow in the dark bugs toys). They flash / glow to show their interest in the member of the opposite sex and each species of Firefly has a different flash pattern.
If our every day House Fly or Cluster Fly could glow, they may well be more interesting…. but still a pest of course! As it is, when the fly season kicks off, I will be resorting to the usual tried and tested methods to get rid of flying insects in my home.
Interestingly though, these Fireflies, or Lightning bugs – however you want to refer to them – are not technically flies but are in fact beetles. Isn’t it strange how a song can set your mind off……..
There’s a big difference between Fireflies and House Flies: the latter bugs people while the former doesn’t.
Ha ha. Did anyone hear Chris Moyles talk about this on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show yesterday morning regarding the Top Ten???
His comment went along the lines of “if I had that many fireflies I’d call Rentokil.” Any why not? We are the Experts in Pest Control after all!
