Do Pests Like Snow

I started thinking about this question as I stood by my living room window staring out at my very own winter wonderland.  I could not come up with an adequate answer.

I know plenty of pests that love the warmth (e.g. fleas, rats and mice) but how many love the cold or the snow even?

All newly discovered or unusual insects / pests always seem to come from warmer climates, like the Emerald Cockroach wasp from India, but you rarely if ever hear of a pest discovered in the deepest darkest depths of Siberia or in bitterly cold mountain ranges.

So, my question still stands – do pests (like children) like the snow? Let me know!

I joined UK Marketing for Rentokil Pest Control in January 2009. What an enlightenment that has been….cheese mites, bed bugs and confused flour beetles, I never knew such things existed but I’ve certainly learnt how Rentokil expertise and experience eliminates them. Now my mission is to use the website to show the population of the UK that whatever their pest problem, Rentokil have the solution. Life outside of work revolves around my husband and kids, so life is pretty hectic!

Wood-boring insects don’t mind snow, especially Furniture Beetle. Let me explain….

Snow causes loads of problems on the roofs of old buildings, it seeps through lead joints when it melts, blocks gutters and causes water penetration that you wouldn’t normally get with rainfall. That’s good news for wood-boring insects in this country that require wood to be wet in order for then to start eating it.

The insects themselves couldn’t give a stuff about snow at the moment as they are all larvae inside the timbers ready to emerge in the spring. They love wet wood though and will be munching happily until then.
