As the days get chilly and the temperature drops, we all prefer to stay indoors with a warm and comfortable atmosphere around us. Rats are no different in behaviour when it comes to survival. As the winter approaches rats constantly search for shelter and food reserves to survive the harsh temperatures. Here’s how to prevent rats from entering your home in the winter.

Why Do Rats Enter Your Home?

Rats do not hibernate during the winter hence they need to ensure their survival by finding adequate shelter and nutrition to keep them going. They enter your house in search of these things, that is why their sightings increase exponentially during the winter season. They will gather food and start stocking it so it can last through the winter.

Common places where they are found are:

  • Basements
  • Attic
  • Closets
  • Cabinets
  • Empty wardrobe
  • Drawer

Signs of An Rat Infestation

The first thing you need to do is keep an eye on the various signs that are present in your home in case of a rat infestation.

These are the most common signs:

  • Rat Droppings
  • Scratching Noises
  • Footprints
  • Rub Marks
  • Burrows

If you identify any of the following signs then you must get professional pest control help immediately as rats are dangerous and can transfer a number of diseases to humans.

How To Prevent An Infestation?

It is important for you to take precautions so that you do not create an inviting atmosphere for these creatures. Follow these recommended precautionary measures to minimise the chances of an infestation.

  • Keep your house tidy. Do not provide them with the opportunity to infest.
  • Do not provide convenient places for them to hide. Seal all potential entry points.
  • Do not keep food lying around. Store it in proper containers.
  • Use proper methods to discard food sources as they prefer rubbish.
  • Keep your doors and windows closed.
