Wasp Nest Treatment

Image of a wasp nest from Rentokil Pest Control Ireland offering a wasp nest removal service & advice on how to get rid of wasps.

A single wasp nest may contain thousands of wasps which can swarm and attack if disturbed.

If the location of a wasp nest is likely to put people at risk, then the nest should be destroyed.

Do not attempt to remove the wasp nest yourself if you believe you may be allergic to wasp stings or if the wasp nest is indoors or inaccessible.

A wasp sting can be a very painful experience and may even be life threatening to the one in thirty people who are allergic to stings. If you have been stung by a wasp or bee, please refer to our guide to treating insect stings.

Rentokil Ireland offers wasp nest treatment, which is fast and effective. Our service includes the use of pesticides to destroy the wasp nest.

How To Locate Wasp Nests

  • Common sites for a wasp nest include under the roof eaves, in lofts or in sheds and out-buildings – a place where they can easily access the outdoors.
  • To locate the nest, watch the flight path of returning wasps – wasps usually return to the nest at dusk or at dawn.
  • A wasp nest is made from chewed wood that gives it its distinctive papery walls.
  • By early summer, a typical wasp nest will be 30cm across although they can be much larger.
  • A queen wasp will start to build a nest in the spring but then as workers hatch they take over nest building.

Wasp swarms are dangerous - if in doubt, seek professional help.

Finding a Wasp Nest in Winter

A wasp nest discovered in winter is totally safe as it will be inactive.

It is advisable to remove inactive nests found during winter as it could lead to secondary pests like the Biscuit beetle. These scavenger beetles are attracted to the nest by the dead wasps inside of the nest.

In winter time it is possible to still see active female wasps, which are looking to overwinter. They can sometimes be found in cracks & crevices or perhaps attics. They will generally not be aggressive at this time of year.

Wasp Nest Treatment Tips

If you decide to remove a wasp nest yourself, please read the advice below:

  • Wasps are inactive at night – this would be the best time to treat the nest. However, they respond quickly to any sign of light, so avoid even the use of a torch, as this may provoke them to leave the nest.
  • Wear protection - wasps will attack if disturbed. Minimise uncovered skin and the risk of wasp stings by wearing gloves and a hat.
  • Destroy a wasp nest as early as possible - the risk from wasps is particularly high towards the end of summer when wasps become aggressive.
  • Keep nearby windows closed, if the nest is located near your home.

It is possible to use DIY products to destroy a wasp nest yourself if the nest is easily accessible. Follow all instructions very carefully.
