- Bird nests a breeding ground for variety of diseases and insects
- Rentokil deal with thousands of pest problems relating to birds each year
We know that many pests like to invade our homes in the winter, yet we can easily forget the creatures that arrive in spring and summer.
Bird species are migrating north to Ireland and looking for the perfect spot to build their nests, and that could mean your home or office.
Most bird species are a pleasure to have around, thanks to their attractive plumage and beautiful song; however, the wrong kind of bird in the wrong place can be a real menace.

Problematic birds may sometimes include Feral Pigeons, Collared Doves, Wood Pigeons, Magpies, Grey Crows, Gulls all of which like to nest on ledges, in roofs, canopies, gutters and large buildings.
By the very nature of the materials with which they are constructed, nests both old and new can become a natural breeding ground for a wide variety of diseases and insects. In turn, these can effect both residential and commercial premises and become a serious pest in their own right.
Every year Rentokil experiences callouts to remove not only bird nests, but also insects, bird mites, dust mites, bed bugs, fleas, beetles and bluebottles that birds leave behind. Rentokil deal with thousands of pest bird related calls each year.
Dr Colm Moore, Area Technical Manager at Rentokil UK, Ireland and the Baltic, has some suggestions to protect your home and business from bird invasion: “The best and easiest way to protect your premises from pest and nuisance birds is to maintain good housekeeping measures, such as sweeping up spillages as they occur and by having a good waste management programme in place.”
“Remember the birds are there for a reason, they need encouragement to enter buildings such as food spillages and/or doors being constantly left open. Apart from leaving windows and doors open, poor building maintenance is also a contributory factor as birds can easily gain access via broken facias, windows and roof tiles. Sometimes birds choose buildings to roost or nest, as they provide the perfect environment to look, loiter and litter,” he continued.
Rentokil Pest Control Ireland offers a range of bird proofing services, to help keep birds away from your property, helping to reduce maintenance and cleaning costs. Rentokil also provides a bird foul removal service, to clean up the mess created by birds already in residence. The area is first disinfected by fully trained and equipped technicians and then treated for secondary insect and microbial pests with suitable biocides.
