Rentokil Pest Control, Ireland’s leading provider of pest control services has reported an increase of 55% in customer enquiries and call-outs this autumn relating to rodents, compared to summer figures this year.
In Rentokil’s experience, an increase in rats and mice around homes and premises of about 30% is typical between the summer and autumn season. This is no doubt due to arrival of colder temperatures and limited food resources. An increase of 55% for this period is unprecedented when compared to Rentokil’s figures for the same period over the last ten years.
In addition to the decline in weather conditions experienced across the country in recent weeks and dwindling rodent food reserves, the company feel this growth in rodent activity could indicate a heavy breeding population for 2010. Cut backs in basic hygiene and waste management may also be contributory factors in the increased queries.
According to Dr. Colm Moore, Technical Manager, Rentokil “Given this evidence, it would appear that it is important to keep rodents at bay now more than ever.”
“Prevention is better than cure in the case of any pest infestation,” Dr. Moore advises, “rather than applying and re-applying pesticides in the hope of killing these unwanted guests, preventing access to your home or workplace in the first instance is essential. This can only be achieved by using suitable and effective materials.”
He continues: “by rodent proofing your buildings and maintaining sound waste management practices, home owners and business people alike will greater protect themselves and their customers from exposure to nasty bugs such as fleas, ticks, mites, bacteria and viruses. The potential for disease and contamination should not be surprising when you consider where rodents move and live e.g. sewerage pipes, rubbish tips, bins etc. It’s when they set up home in your building, spreading bugs, that they then become a problem.”
