Bed Bug Infestations are Rising to Record Numbers in 2008

15 September, 2008

“Bed bug infestations have become a global epidemic and are on the increase because of increased travel, the booming trade in second-hand goods and climate change” that’s according to Dr. Colm Moore, Technical Manager at Rentokil Pest Control. “Complaints about the itchy nuisances are on the rise and are set to reach their highest point ever in Ireland as evidenced by the number of calls for treatment to our Rentokil Pest Control team”. In the first six months of 2008 there has been a 64% increase in the number of bed bug treatments carried out nationwide in Ireland compared to 1998 figures.

The most common location of outbreaks is within hotels and hostels where bedbugs and their eggs are carried in on travellers’ clothes and suitcases, where they then quickly spread from room to room and this has resulted in a greater risk for any organisation involved in the hospitality, accommodation, and transportation or long-term care of people.

Rentokil will be hosting a seminar on 30th September 2008 which will be addressed by Dr. Michael F. Potter from the Department of Entomology University of Kentucky, who specializes in pests infesting buildings, people and property. His extensive research programme provides cutting edge information and advice about pests to companies and their clients world wide to benefit them in:

  • Learn about best practice techniques for dealing with bed bugs developed from global experience
  • Get advice on how to spot bed bugs in a premises to ensure they don’t harm ones business and brand reputation.
